"The lotus flower cannot grow in clean water. It requires the dark, heavy mud to survive. But when it finally breaks the surface, it blooms completely in the light, untouched by the darkness below. You are the lotus."

Introduction
There is a profound difference between surviving a storm and learning how to live in the light after the rain finally stops.
For the first two decades of my life, I did not know what it meant to simply exist. I was born into the devastated aftermath of the Khmer Rouge, arriving in a fractured Cambodia where the absence of my father was the loudest thing in our home. From the crowded, anxious streets of Phnom Penh to the unforgiving mud of the Mekong River basin, my childhood was a masterclass in desperation.
I learned how to stretch a single handful of rice into a meal. I learned how to outsmart the people who wanted to buy and own my body. And I learned how to constantly reinvent myself just to stay one step ahead of the pain.
When you grow up fighting for your life, your trauma becomes your armor. You learn how to swallow your shame, mask your fear, and wear your scars as a warning to the world.
But armor is heavy. Eventually, if you want to truly live, you have to find the courage to take it off.
This book is the map of how I took mine off.
It is the story of shedding my skin, over and over again, until I finally found a version of myself I could live with. It is about the complex, heartbreaking reality of loving a mother who hurts you, the danger of mistaking a golden cage for a safe harbor, and the miraculous, healing power of unconditional love.
I am writing this for anyone who has ever felt like they were drowning in the mud. I want to tell you the absolute truth about the scars you carry:
You can look at them, but you do not have to stare at them.
You do not have to stand in your past forever. You can learn how to bend, how to heal, and how to reach for the sun.
